As strangers in a foreign land, they were required to seek the King and ask for clear passage as they traveled through his land on their way to see Jesus. If not, they risked being killed. The star did not lead them to King Harod. King Herod was in their path.

King Harod was ordered by Cesar to kill the Messiah. The Magi were not aware of King Harod’s intentions and shared the information about them following the star to the Messiah. Why would they purposely tell King Harod if they knew he was ordered to kill the Messiah? If you read Matthew 2:12 it says: And having been warned in a dream not to return to Harod, they departed for their country by another way.
The Magi intentionally disobeyed King Harod.

God thinks further than we do. Going to King Herod set into motion some more of God’s prophecies. God always gets things done that He wills.

It was probably over the general area and looked to the Magi like it was over Jerusalem, not far from Bethlehem, and that would be logical that a ‘King" was born in the most important city in the area, not a farm town and in a stable away from the city. They did not know the "King" was not part of Herod’s family.
Also God knew what would happen and it was probably so Jesus would go into Egypt, like his ancestors had done, then leave and go back to his own country.
Astrology is not all that accurate.

An astronomical event – the appearance of the star, likely would be too huge and imprecise to guide anyone from far away to a particular person in a populated area. Visitors would expect that the local ruler, Herod, would know more precisely what was happening, and where the newborn king could be found. Herod told the wise men where under the star to look for the one they were seeking.

Merry Christmas and Peace to all.

No, you are adding to the Bible. The Bible does not say that the star lead the astrologers to King Herod. The Bible says that the wise men saw his star in the east. They simply came to the area where they knew the Jews resided:
Matthew 2:2
Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
Important to note, they said "to worship him."
Again after the wise men left Herod, the Bible again implies that they first saw the star in the east, and it was stationary. It did not begin to "lead" them that is move, until after they left Herod.
Matthew 2:9
When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
The Bible did not say that the star, which they saw in th east, went before them until it came and stood over where King Herod was. I think you need to add a note to your post retracting your question as such. Anything other, seems like just another vain attempt to pervert the Word of God to make it say what you want, for whatever that motive might be. Remember you have to answer to God for this one, and you know the warnings in the last chapter of Revelations.

There are two possible theories, one which is discarded for obvious reasons, the other is that the star was not from God but from his opponent, Satan. After all the wise men were pagans and worshipped idols or such. There is no reason for them to be shown the child in the house 2 years after his birth unless for the chance to kill him.
Thus this seemed to be a veiled attempt at Jesus’ life.

Edit: @David M
Please look at the account. It was not the wise men that initiated the going to the king. The star is shown to lead them there first. They had nothing to do with that. Thus your reaoning is faulty.

It lead them to Bethlehem. Vanishing with the sun. They went to Herod to ask if he knew where the Child was. Herod sent them on their way saying that they should return to him so he could worship the babe too. Read the whole story not interpret what you think it said.
