I think that in the jewish system rabbis were taken from the upper class so the gold must have advanced the family socially. I expect that it put the family into a more favorable position than they had been and therefore launched the career of Jesus auspiciously. Many say that Jesus went to the far east for his education and there learned the eastern mysteries which were the foundation of his teachings. I also know that the Buddha left a life of wealth to conduct his ministry also.
