1.Describe what is ironic about “Charles” and “The Gift of the Magi”. Explain how each author uses irony and the effect that each story has on readers. Be sure to use details about the characters and their actions to support your answer.
2.How does Mathilde’s situation change her over the course of “The Necklace”? Describe her at the start of the story and at the end of the story. Why is what happens to her ironic? Include details from the story to support your answer.
Gift of the Magi (it’s been 40 years since I read it, so you might want to check the story yourself):
The hero sells his watch to buy her some special combs for her long and luxurious hair for Christmas.
She sells her hair to buy a chain (fob) for his watch for Christmas.
It is ironic because they have both sold their one prized possession in order to buy a gift for each other. In their desire to give a nice surprise gift, neither one now has any use for the other’s gift.
Sorry, I’ve never read The Necklace.
