Children born on holidays?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

My son was born on January 6th which is a big holiday where I am from. It is called the three kings day. And it is the same as christmas except the three kings bring the kids even more presents on this day than santa. Instead of milk and cookies, you leave grass and water for their camels lol.
So not only is it a major holiday. but it is also one where presents are expected.
How does one go about separating his birthday from this holiday? Family usually gets together and has a big dinner together. We plan on having more kids so how would that work also? Does he get more presents? etc etc?
What are your thoughts?
Thanks in advance =)

Please do not celebrate his the day before or the day after. Celebrate it on that day! It is a special day and he should be honored to be born on that same day.

After the family dinner together, sing Happy Birthday over a cake to your son. Give him his birthday presents then, separately from when everyone else opens their gifts.

The only time I would celebrate his birthday on a different day is when throwing a party for kids.

Anyone else on here celebrate Epiphany/Three Kings day?

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Before Santa many early Christian cultures did gifts on January 6th the day the Three wise men made it to Jesus and gave him gifts. Many people still do this but not so many in the US. My mother grew up in a culture that did it so we had both Christmas and Three Kings Day. Three Kings day for us usually was much smaller just a gift or two and a special dinner just to keep the culture going. YOu leave hay or grass out for the camels (like you leave cookies for Santa) I keep the tradition with my children also. Just curious if anyone else kept this holiday
That is where the 12 days of Christmas come from it begins on 12/25 the day of his birth and the star appeared and ends on 1/6 the day the Three wise men made it to him and gave hime gifts

We have a special church service and a festival at a church it’s out biggest fund-raising day. we call it the Epiphany Festival.

Why do the world and his dog go nuts at xmas. The 25th of december was supposedly the day Christ was born so..

if you are not a practicing Catholic, why do you bother to buy presents and celebrate xmas day. Oh and the three kings bought Jesus his presents on the 6th January.! So why isn’t this present giving day!

The actual date of Christmas day is an old Pagan festival. If you believe all that religious mumbo-jumbo, Jesus was actually born in June.

Question for any hispanics in Orlando, Fl?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

We are doing the whole Disney vacation thing in January, but I think my husband is disappointed we won’t be in PR for Three Kings Day. Is there any place in Orlando/ Kissemee that does the whole 3 Kings thing like in Puerto Rico?

there is a huge puerto rican population in orlando i suggest you contact the city bureau and see what local activities they have. They dont have anything in the larger parks or malls but maybe within the PR neighborhood. I would contact them directly

As we head into the three day weekend, Christians, are you thankful…?

that God decided sacrifice the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so that your fellow Christians would stop using the bible to justify the mistreatment of African-Americans?

Isn’t it great that he was willing to sacrifice another of his children so that the hateful bigots who didn’t believe that all people were equal would get to take a day off from work because their kid’s schools are closed?
Isn’t it wonderful that God, in all his glorious omniscience, waited until 1968 to teach his "Chrisitan Nation" that doing unto others as you would have done unto you applies to EVERYONE?

I mean, he could have just had Jesus teach everyone that, but he saved some of the glory for others. Isn’t God such a swell guy?
Trooper, I’m sinless. I was born that way. Jesus may have died for YOUR sins, but he couldn’t have died for mine (you see, I wasn’t alive back then, so I can’t be blamed for his death in any way shape or form).

Somehow, I don’t believe you. If you are, indeed, Black, at the very least you should have enough respect for yourself to capitalize it, as you would capitalize "Christian" or "Mexican" or "Canadian" or "Chinese." Don’t try to reprimand me for my use of Dr. King, I AM his dream. If you learn to respect yourself, you will be too.
Jeff S, yeah, it sucks when you have to work anyway, but once your kids are school aged you’ll either have a better job or at the very least, a valid excuse not to go to work that day.
To serve and protect: the people of which you speak, whom you say have had their day before your lord, those are our SENATORS, Congressmen, Governors, bosses, and more. Those people have NOT all died off.

I’m not saying that we haven’t come a long way, I AM saying as much as you Christians like to say that Jesus was the answer to everything, it wasn’t until Dr. King’s death in 1968 that America decided to start thinking seriously about treating all of it’s residents equally. Today, it still hasn’t completely made up it’s mind about that, but it does give the appearance by placating the masses with a public holiday. For some, that’s a whole lot better than nothing. For others, it’s simply a start.

I wish i got it off. This is a lot more celebrate-worthy than Christmas in my book.

Will you be celebrating the birth of God’s Sun on 25th December?

Friday, November 6th, 2009

On the 21st December, which is the Winter Solstice, God’s Sun will die.

It will spend the next three days at it’s lowest point in the sky.

The the three kings, Mintaka, Alnilam and Alnitak will, as always, look towards Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. On 25th December, Sirius marks the exact place on the horizon where God’s Sun will be born, as it starts its annual journey across the horizon through the equinoxes and solstices.

People in the northern hemisphere have been celebrating this event for thousands upon thousands of years.

I celebrate the fact that Christ came to this earth to die for us every day of my life. I don’t wait for certain days to do that. —–

What do you think of my (allegedly) comical poem about a day?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

I stand outside and look at the moon, reflecting-
if I sleep, it’s daytime- so you’re this poem’s selection.
Maybe, I should think of you instead of heaven;
because I was born the same day as the AK-47.
But, don’t blame me, I just write automatically.
Somebody write me a check,
I was born the same day as Inspectah Deck.
Pass me the basketball,
I was born the same day as Pau Gasol.
Maybe, I’m a little too cocky,
I was born the same day as Rocky.
I don’t really believe, that it’s a cursed day;
but, three kings have died, on my birthday.
Another, who passed on my birthday-
philosopher Thomas More-
I keep a few of his thoughts,
in my mental store.
But, there are better things for me to say;
it’s also three nations’ independance day.
I was born the same day,
sometimes, I sound like 50 cent…….
I mean, I’ve got my shirt on, and I’m not in the club…
but, I might party the same day…
nevermind, I don’t know what I meant.
I could use a couple dollars soon, its
me fighting my brother,
the American monetary unit.
Battles were fought;
treaties were signed.
On this day there have been bombings,
horse manure at the House Of Commons.
…it’s not really all so unlucky,
all days are the same
baseball had its first All-Star Game.
The first talking movie was seen in New York;
and, another thing that’s cool….
Paul McCartney and John Lennon,
first met, in Liverpool.
The Mars Pathfinder landed,
taking samples, like an interplanetary bandit.

Yea i liked it it;s very cool and funny,You wrote a great poem and it;s anyone WHO was born the same days as the AK-47 and Rocky has to be a great guy and a hell of a poet so there you are your gifted in more ways than one…take care Cami.

Name "ONE" country celebrating King’s Day..? Customs? What is it?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

King’s Day is an awesome Holiday commemorating the visit of The Three Kings to the baby Jesus…
It is like Christmas all over again but very familiar, so the Christmas Tree doesn’t go down after this day…
Another thing: By the Christmas Tree there’s a Nativity Set decorated as if The Three Kings were in the actual place: Sand, Bushes, Shepperds, Animals, etc… Besides, the whole Nativity…

Why are certain traditions lost while others are gained?

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

I’m writing a term paper for my American Folklore class and I was wondering if you guys could give me some feedback. The topic for my paper is traditions gained and lost in families who immigrated to the United States. For example, back in the DR my parents celebrated Three Kings day and Quinceanera but after coming here they no longer do so, yet they also decided to celebrate Thanksgiving when they came here because it’s a family holiday and we’re big on family. So does anybody have similar stories they could share or maybe an opinion on why certain traditions are dropped while others are adopted? I’d appreciate your help:)

I can see how it would be easy to lose traditions that you were never very excited about back home. Also, traditions that are really hard to continue in your new home and traditions that you need a whole community to really get into the spirit of are both probably pretty easy to lose as well. I think the affection for the new culture and the desire to assimilate help to explain why the new traditions are adopted.

In short: out with the arcane and in with the turkey and gravy!
