What episodes of Star Trek:TOS does Spock show emotions in?

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

I have been watching several videos of Star Trek:TOS, and have seen a couple with Spock showing human emotions. I’d like to know which other episodes have him show emotions.
Thank you! :)

amok time due to pon farr

the cage because the character hadn’t been clearly defined yet

the naked time due to the psi 2000 virus

this side of paradise due to spores

all our yesterdays due to the fact that spock traveled back in time to an era before the vulcans embraced logic

those are all the episodes where spock showed emotion

What could I wear to a Jeffree Star concert?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

If you don’t know who Jeffree Star is, google him.(:
What could I wear to his concert, other than a shirt with him on it. The music’s not really rock, sort of pop-ish…
Thanks.
I sort of dress ’scene’ every day. Loll.(:
So, that’s not really helpful. I wanna dress special-ish. Ha.

i am an 18 year old girl and i really wanna have sex with my boyfriend that is the star of the football team..?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

i wanna have sex with him but i am afraid that he might make me bleed…is there any advice on what i should do if this happens? guys, what would you do if your girl started bleeding on you?

Look, you and every other smart person knows that you’re just trying to tell everyone you’re going to do "it." Why else would "that is the star of the football team" be in the header? All that says to me is that in 20 years he’ll be a fat guy in a letterman’s jacket who talks like Ozzy Osbourne. He’ll also try to relate every football game he watches to his performance in "that game when we almost went to state." Do yourself a favor and just keep it between you two.

Which of the following is NOT an indication of a binary star system?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

a-orbital motion

b- variation of luminosity

c-characteristic of spectral lines

The question probably belongs in astronomy, but the answer is c. Orbital motion is an indicator of a binary star system because the stars pulling on each other will make their orbits appear to wobble. Variation of luminosity will occur because at times one star will be behind the other, blocking its light. Spectral lines won’t matter, however, because they are due to the composition of the stars, which does not change.

Hmm, checking the Wikipedia article on binary stars, Ken (next poster… uh, make that the former next poster – why’d he delete an informative message?) is right about how the spectral lines will produce a detectable Doppler shift. However, the same article has this to say about luminosity:

"Eclipsing binaries are variable stars, not because the light of the individual components vary but because of the eclipses. The light curve of an eclipsing binary is characterized by periods of practically constant light, with periodic drops in intensity. If one of the stars is larger than the other, one will be obscured by a total eclipse while the other will be obscured by an annular eclipse."

Seems like all three are possible indicators of a binary system — you sure there wasn’t a fourth choice? :)

Can I make star shaped flowers from powdered sugar frosting and let them dry to put on my cake?

Friday, January 1st, 2010

I would like to take the star decorating tip and make single flowers from powdered sugar frosting. Let them dry out, so they can be handled with out breaking them, then put them on top of each piece of cake I am serving as it is being served. Is it possible to make these from this type of frosting? How far ahead of time can I make them? How long will it take for them to dry? How do I store them?

Yes, you can. Use Royal Icing (recipe follows) and pipe the star flowers onto a piece of wax or parchment paper. Let dry thoroughly (keep them on a tray or in an open container, not letting them touch) about 24-48 hours depending on the size of your decorations. You’ll notice the top/outside of the decorations dries very quickly, but the inside/bottom will stay soft longer and needs that time (24-48 hours) to dry thoroughly. Once dry they will keep indefinitely; you could make them weeks ahead of time if you wanted to.

Royal Icing

4 cups powdered sugar
3 tablespoons Meringue Powder (avail. at craft stores like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Joann’s, etc. in their cake decorating aisle)
5-6 tablespoons water

All bowls/utensils etc. must be grease-free! Combine all ingredients in the mixing bowl of a stand mixer, or in a large bowl. Use stand mixer (or use a hand-held mixer) on low-medium speed to mix ingredients until frosting becomes very white and fluffy in appearance and has lost its glossiness. This will usually take 7-10 minutes (7 for a stand mixer and more towards 10 if using a hand-held.) Keep mixer speed on the lower side to avoid whipping in too much air.

Royal dries out quickly. Keep a damp cloth or paper towel over the bowl so it doesn’t dry out. Keep a damp paper cloth wrapped over the end of your decorating tip/bag when not in use for the same reason.

Happy Decorating!

What is that very bright star just after sunset to the southeast?

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Hi I live in western Canada, to be more specific Vancouver. And around 6pm pacific time (just after sunset) there is this lone star that is extremely bright to the southeastern part of the sky. Does anybody know which star that is? or if its a planet? Today’s date is February 12th if that helps.

Venus is extremely bright these days, but it appears in the southwest, near the setting sun. It could not possibly be in the southeast just after sunset.

What does the crescent moon and star symbol of New Orleans mean?

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

As previously stated, that symbol is the traditional badge of the New Orleans Police Department. New Orleans is called the "crescent city" because of the shape of the Mississippi River along the city. The five point star is the traditional sheriff’s emblem. Putting the two, the crescent and the star, together makes the badge a uniquely New Orleans identification. Actually, the moon has nothing to do with the crescent design (it comes instead from the river). The crescent sits above, and attached to, the star.

The first New Orleans police was established in 1797 under Spanish governor, the Baron de Carondelete. The force was integrated and North Rampart street was assigned to the black officers.

In most of the 19th century the New Orleans police department was mostly political pay back jobs and the force changed completely with each new mayor.

For a very brief period in the 1950’s there was a television series about the NOPD. Currently, HBO is about to debut a similar program called Treme (named for the New Orleans neighborhood of that same name).
