Why do people say there were 3 wisemen? There were 3 gifts, we do not know how many men were travelling?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

We know they were travelling together, and that three gifts were given:Gold,Frankincense, and Myrrh.
So why do we assume that there were three men?
Thank you in advance for all of your answers

Tradition says that there were three and that their names were Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, but since the Bible does not say, we have no way of knowing whether the tradition is accurate.

It is a common misconception that the wise men visited Jesus at the stable on the night of His birth. In fact, the wise men came days, months, or possibly even years later. That is why Matthew 2:11 says the wise men visited and worshiped Jesus in a house, not at the stable.

Is the little drummer boy the archetype for artists who feel they don’t actually have to give anything?

Friday, January 1st, 2010

I remember Live Aid where we were expected to cough up $$ but the artists just had to contribute their time. It had to be a real irritant to the Magi who after all those years in Mage school could contribute gold frankincense and myrrh and then this kid shows up and starts drumming and gets his own song

Probably more about the youth of the drummer, not his profession.

Were the Magi’s Frankincense, Gold and Myrrh re-gifts or original purchases?

I have it on good authority that they regifted

what do you think Jesus did with the gold, frankincense and myrrh?

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

I’m speculating, that Jesus’ parents took these expensive gifts [given exclusively to kings and other royalty] sold them, and used the $ gained to pay for their stay in Egypt, after Joseph and Mary were warned in a dream, to get out of there and flee to Egypt, before King Herod murdered them all.

when jesus was telling the poor not to worry, did he mention he’d be given gold and frankincense as a child?

Monday, December 21st, 2009

he was basically like a spoiled trust fund kid, saying he cared for the poor, but knowing he had that valuable stash of gold, frankincense and myrrh he could fall back on if the messiah business didn’t work out
Ryan: so he refused a few hours after being born. my, he was a quick learner! And where in the bible does it say he refused?

Troll

Jehovah’s witness, Did Mary & Joseph accept the Gold,Frankincense and myrrh from the "Astrologers" ?

Friday, December 18th, 2009

What did the Gifts signify ?
Gold
Frankincense
Myrrh
Kingship
Priesthood
Death

It took roughly a millenium and a half for Christianity to embrace these kinds of scientific studies. Just imagine how enlightened Mary and Joseph really were to invite in and accept these kinds of gifts from the magi. Somehow the JWs of the Org just don’t get it, their minds are all fogged up with Watchtower rhetorics! They were even told to believe the child Jesus was already 2 years old, this coming from what Herod said in Matthew 2:16, when he ordered the killing of all children 2 years old OR UNDER! If Jesus was 2 years old then what is the point for killing those who are under 2 years old? The JWs of the Org will not look into this matter, they lack any clear judgment in seeing the blatant lies behind their false organization!

something is missing!?

In the bible it tells of three wise men bearing gifts, gold, frankincense and myrrh. Can anyone tell me what happened to it please.

Matthew 2:1-3 "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled."
Matthew 2:11 "And when they were come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down, and worshiped Him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto Him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh."
there is no evidence that there were three of them but there were three gifts…i guess they do what other people do when they get a gift basket….they used it….they fled to Egypt away from Herod…the gold of course was useful as money, myrrh was used as an oil base for perfumes mostly used in funerals so the bodies wouldn’t smell, frankincense had medical properties as well as burned as a welcome to guests….all pretty useful in their journey

Is this a coincidence or the roots of Christianity?

"The vestiges of pagan religion in Christian symbology are undeniable. Egyptian sun disks became the halos of Catholic saints. Pictograms of Isis nursing her miraculously conceived son Horus became the blueprint for our modern images of the Virgin Mary nursing Baby Jesus. And virtually all the elements of the Catholic ritual – the miter, the altar, the doxology, and communion, the act of "God-eating" – were taken directly from earlier pagan mystery religions."

"Nothing in Christianity is original. The pre-Christian God Mithras – called the Son of God and the Light of the World – was born on December 25, died was buried in a rock tomb, and then resurrected in three days. By the way, December 25 is also the birthday or Osiris, Adonis, and Dionysus. The newborn Krishna was presented with gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Even Christianity’s weekly holy day was stolen from the pagans."

Christianity is nothing more than an ancient pagan religion dressed up in new clothes. In other words, "the names have been changed, but the players remain the same". These myths and practices have been around for thousands of years….long, long, long before anyone had even founded the city of Bethlehem, let alone heard of this jesus.

Salvation, heaven, hell, baptism, eucharist, virgin births, dying and resurected gods and much more are all of pagan origin. For some interesting reading on the pagan origins of the christ myth try:
