I know what it is.
Frankincense and Myrrh are fragrant resins that have been used as incense and medicine by many cultures for thousands of years. The spiritual and healing properties of these resins and other fragrant plants have been forgotten by many.
Have you used this aroma in you home to freshen the air?

I have used myrrh, it is a gum type substance from a tree. It is has healing properties and I used it in some healing ointment that I made with other herbs.
Never had any frankincense to work with.
Here’s where to get frankincense oil. I don’t know where to get myrrh. And I don’t know what they smell like.

The gold could be represented by some of those candy "coins" wrapped in gold wrapping (which the children can have as treats after the performance!) or a brick or box wrapped in gold foil, which you should be able to find at a craft store. The Frankincense and Myrrh are both perfumes, of a sort, so a large perfume bottle might do for each of them.

I can see the gold part, of course, and maybe even the frankincense as an honor for an important child, but why give him something that had connotations of death?
Maybe the three wise men located him through following a star, but it doesn’t mean they knew that the Romans would kill him thirty years later. Nor would that have been a good thing to tell Mary.
Was myrrh an inappropriate gift for a baby?

Actually, they don’t have connotations of death. You don’t understand the intentions. They are used for protection from spirits and are used during religious rituals. They are also used during meditation and prayer (frankincense and myrrh). My family back home in Africa still use them today for those purposes.

Much is made of these three gifts in the bible, but there is no mention in the bible as to what happened to them. We can all make an assumption, but could it be he never actually received any.

Much is not made of those three gifts they get barely a sentence in one of the gospels and why should the reader care?

The point that was being made was that the pagan wise men recognised Jesus as a King hence the gold, a priest hence the Frankincense and a sacrifice, hence the Myrrh. Why would the gospel writers or readers care what happened to the gifts afterwards?

Of course there is the possibility the whole thing could be made up that is why the religion is calling upon you to make your own mind up and choose whether you believe it or not.
