THREE MEN? Who says?
Common misconception.
There is no mention of how many men came. All we know is that there was more than ONE.
They did not come at his birth. They came about TWO YEARS later, when Joseph, Mary and Jesus lived in A HOUSE.
They brought gifts not to honour HIS BIRTH, but to honour him AS FUTURE KING.
Christmas is a "renamed" pagan holiday, just like a sugar-coated cyanide pill.

They were gifts to honor him, just like they would have brought gifts if they had gone to visit a king.

well, based on the star positions given in the bible, astronomers have worked out that it was much more likely that jesus was actualy born around mid august, so, they would have to be birthday presents.

The Old testament foretells a coming Messiah. The Magi were three astrologers who studied these prophecies and studied the stars to finds that date. Christmas didn’t exist then, but they followed the signs of the stars to get to Jesus. They gave presents because they were worshipping Him as their King and God and Lord and Messiah.

First, we do not know how many magi came from the east. We only know it was plural meaning 2 or more.
We know there were 3 kinds of gifts offered to Jesus, not for His birthday nor for Christmas, but to worship Jesus the newborn king.
Christmas did not exist except as a pagan holiday, Saturnalia.
There is no record of giving birthday gifts in that part of history.

The ancient Romans exchanged gifts as part of their sun worship festival, Saturnalia.
“In any case the Magi gave gifts to Jesus, not to one another, in accord with what was then customary, when visiting notable people. After all, Matthew’s gospel shows their interest in Jesus was as the future king of the Jews.

There was not mention of three wise men. Only that three gifts are mentioned. Some believe that many "wise ‘men’" showed up and that other gifts were given, also. Many believe that with the birth of Jesus, that it was the coming of the new age of Pisces. Thus the fish symbol.

Ok… the wise men saw the star in the sky, so they knew a king was born…. so to honor the king they brought him gifts of Gold, Frankenscense and Mhyrr, Most schollars believe they didnt actaully see him till he was a few years old… so it was neither a birthday present or a Christmas present. Christmas is not JESUS birthday… it is just the day we set aside for remembering his birth… he was probably born sometime in Spring

The wise men gave him gifts to honor him as the king. There is really no mention how many there were, we know that there was more than one. The number 3 is used because of the 3 gifts that were given.
They did not visit Christ at the time of his birth. He was between 1-2 years old when they visited him. In the bible it says that they came to his house. They had stopped off to ask Herod where the King was and told him that the king was a child- Herod had been looking for an adult. It was because of their visit that Herrod ordered all children age two and under be killed. I believe that it is the order from Herrod (children under 2) that gives the time frame as to when the wisemen actually visited. Also if they started the Journey as soon as they saw the star, it was too long of a journey for them to get there in a few days. Most Scholars believe it took them at least a year to make the Journey, although it is unknown where exactly they came from. Their gifts likely helped Joseph and Mary as they escaped into Egypt, to avoid Jesus being killed by Herrod’s men.

What 3 wise men?
The bible does not mention 3 wise men anywhere.

The Bible does not say there were 3 wise men.
It says there were an unpecified number of Magi. They were wise – acknowledging this cosmically important event.
They gave 3 gifts – gold myrrh and frankincense – which is probably why people think there were 3 wise men.
The gifts were on the occasion of his birth. Though it should be noted that they arrived after the birth of Jesus – possibly a year or so later, since Herod ordered the killing of all boys 2 years old and under.
This is what the Bible actually says:
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

The presents were from Magi (traditionally known as the wise men). How many there were is unknown.
It was their custom to bring gifts to people they were to honour. The Magi were a tribe but many also were priests and were found in the ancient Persian and Babylonian later Parthian empires.
The gifts have a symbolism to Christians which were not likely to have had the same significance to the Magi as it was a fulfilment of a prophecy written by no less a man than the famous Solomon.
‘The kings of Tarshish and of distant shores will bring tribute to him, the kings of Sheba and Seba will present him gifts.’ (Psalm 72v10)
