MLM Paid Lead Scams
March 10th, 2010Okay, you just got back from an MLM pitch somebody you work with asked you to attend, and you’re actually interested. On the surface, it sounds good but you want to do your homework about the whole MLM (Multi Level Marketing) or Network Marketing industry, as it is sometimes called. The business model you heard in your friend’s presentation sounded good, buy you know it will take home based business leads to begin to build a distributor network. Where are you going to get them?
Many newcomers to MLM start out with free network marketing leads – their friends, neighbors, relatives, and business associates. Generally, these social contacts are the best MLM leads, as most of your friends will be at least willing to hear what you have to say. Problem for you is you don’t have many contacts, so your list of free network marketing leads will be pretty short. You’ve been told you can pay for leads, but are they any good?
While paid leads aren’t always cheap MLM leads, they are out there. Search the Internet and you’ll find a lot of companies in the business of selling home based business leads. If you dig a little deeper, adding the word “scam” to your search queries, you’ll discover some disturbing facts.
For one, paid leads are sold to anyone who operates a home based business of any kind. The same lists are sold over and over again, so when you contact a lead you’ve paid for, chances are pretty good someone else will have already contacted them.
Another thing you’ll notice is the number of articles that scream “PAID LEADS ARE A SCAM”, and then end the article with their own scam – a pitch for an expensive DVD or EBook that will teach you everything you need to know about generating your own free network marketing leads.
A sad fact about the MLM industry as a whole is that a lot of people make their money selling educational materials to new MLM home based business owners. Even some of the best known MLM opportunities hound their distributors to buy educational cassette tapes, books, and attend expensive conferences and workshops.
Unfortunately there are no easy answers. If the business model of the MLM opportunity you’re considering is truly sound, with good quality products aimed at real market needs, you can generate leads over time the old fashioned way, one customer at a time. A satisfied customer may be your best source of leads.
